Angelique Kerber is Germany’s new tennis queen: 19 years after Steffi Graf, she has fulfilled her childhood dream to become the world’s number one female player. In Singapore, the 28-year-old almost succeeded in adding the finishing touch to her dream year, following Grand Slam titles at the Australian and US Open, the Wimbledon final and the Olympic silver medal in Rio de Janeiro with an appearance in the final of the World Championships.

The BAMBI jury explain: “With her superb performance, Angelique Kerber has not only won tournaments and topped the world rankings, but also played her way into the hearts of millions of Germans. This is a historic success: Not since Steffi Graf has the sport had such a presence in Germany.”

Angelique Kerber will therefore be awarded this year’s BAMBI for “Sport”.
