This year’s BAMBI ceremony on 17 November 2016 is to be attended by two superstars of sport: Joachim Löw and Bastian Schweinsteiger will both come to Berlin to pick up the “Integration” award and the “Special jury award”.

Löw receives BAMBI for “Integration”

Everyone talks about integration, but national coach Joachim Löw has been taking action for quite some time; of the 23 German players he selected for the European Championships in France, ten have foreign roots. He has turned the national team into ambassadors for a unified Germany and a prime example of successful integration. And this is why Joachim Löw has been awarded this year’s BAMBI for “Integration”.

The jury explains: “Together, Joachim Löw’s players represent a multicultural, cosmopolitan, modern Germany and strongly signal that integration is possible and can benefit everyone! For many years, integration has been a matter of course in Joachim Löw’s German national squad.”

“Special jury award” goes to Bastian Schweinsteiger

By the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil, Bastian Schweinsteiger had become a living legend in German football, captaining the national team to victory and playing an exemplary final against Argentina, playing the whole 120 minutes despite numerous fouls and injuries. As part of FC Bayern, he won eight German championships, seven German Football Cups and two Supercups, became FIFA Club World Champion and won the Champions League. In the national team, as well as winning the World Cup, he placed third in two further World Cups, became European vice-champion and reached two European Championship semi-finals.

“With a hitherto unknown combination of discipline and effortless skill, Bastian Schweinsteiger has won the hearts of the fans and become one of Germany’s best and most popular footballers”, said the BAMBI jury. “His name symbolises sporting ambition and fair competition. He exudes both pure fighting spirit and a likeable, easy-going nature.”

For his outstanding achievements in national and international football, Bastian Schweinsteiger will therefore be presented with the “Special jury award” at the BAMBI ceremony on 17 November.
